Sisterless Sisterhood.

WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND. TOMBOY, GIRLY GIRL, OR A MIX OF THE TWO – THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO BE A GIRL. JUST LIKE THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO BE A BLACK GIRL. NATURAL HAIR, RELAXED, WEAVE, SHAVED HEAD – WE ARE ALL BLACK. YOUR HAIR DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR RACE/HOW BLACK YOU ARE. THOSE PEOPLE WITH THEIR DISRESPECTFUL AND ELITIST ATTITUDES TOWARDS THEIR FELLOW BLACK WOMEN ARE NOT HELPING THEIR RACE – THEY ARE HURTING AND HINDERING IT.

I ran across this quote a while ago, and it amazed me at how relevant to life it was.  I can’t say that I identify as a feminist, but I don’t like to sit back and just watch the problem within our black female community. Why is it that black women seem to always find a way to constantly be at war with one another? Just when I naïvely think that we have reached common ground, I am rudely hit with reality.

The debate about black women’s hair is a debate that I don’t think will ever be settled. With the rise of women embracing their natural hair, the debate is only getting worse. There are the women that relax their hair and have grown so accustom to the idea of straight hair, that they are baffled as to why more and more women are ditching their “creamy crack” and “going natural”.  Originally, relaxers were created to help black women better “manage their hair”, which is code for fit the European standard of beauty. While that was the main purpose of relaxers when they were first created, I don’t think this is the reason why many women still get relaxers today…well at least not all of them.  Believe it or not, some women just prefer straight hair, and they shouldn’t be looked down upon just for doing so.

This brings me to my next point—natural hair. Natural is praised just as much as it is criticized. I believe the fact that many women are becoming more knowledgeable about the hair that grows of or their heads is a wonderful thing. I find it absolutely astonishing that the fact that a black woman decides to wear her hair the way it was intended by God is just a big deal. This just goes to show how much American society or society in general is influenced or should I say brainwashed by the European beauty ideals.  Its really sad that people outside of our community are more accepting of natural hair than our own black men and women. The comments made about natural hair by black men and women alike are disheartening.  There is no reason why a woman should second-guess her decision to embrace her natural hair because people don’t approve.

No group of people is superior to the other. Women that relax their hair are not any better than women who chose to wear their natural hair and vice-versa.  We are all women…BLACK WOMEN. We can’t get others to love us if we don’t love ourselves.
